Balboa Bay Club & Resort

The Balboa Bay Club & Resort (BBC) is a hotel in Newport Beach, California, United States on 15 acres (61,000 m2) and was founded in 1948 as a private beach club. For many years it had a public board of directors and many Newport Beach residents served on the board.

It is on the Newport Harbor waterfront. The BBC was originally a private club that over the last few years evolved into the public hotel and resort. The club features both a hotel, as well as short and long term apartments, located on the oceanfront.

The Balboa Bay Club is located on Pacific Coast Highway in what is considered to be central Newport Beach. The Balboa Bay Club location includes rental apartments and condos as well as one of the larger boat slip marinas in Newport Harbor. The club for many years was known for its sanctioned events and celebrity visitors.

The "A" Dock provides hosts to some of the largest powerboats in Newport Beach harbor and is able to accommodate yachts of up to 130 feet. It its early days the club was known simply as the "BBC". The Balboa Bay Club at one time also had an off-site tennis club, located in the nearby Newport Center.

Barry Goldwater stayed there in 1964.[1]

Tennis tournaments have been held at the resort, including one in 1958.[2]

Balboa Bay was owned by Jack Wrather from 1960 until 1971, when he sold it to William Ray.[3] Ray died in 1991, and his widow owned the club until 2011, when she sold it to Winston Chung, a Chinese businessman.[4]
